The article "Expansive Learning in Digital Environments: An Epistemic Network Analysis from a Gender Perspective," written by Rocío Jiménez-Cortés, explores the challenges and opportunities of learning in digital environments through Expansive Learning Theory, with a particular focus on gender influence in this process.
Using a quantitative ethnographic method, the study analyzes 158 discursive units in asynchronous forums, applying Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA) to evaluate the dialogic interaction among student teams, differentiated by gender composition.
The results reveal four discursive profiles: empathic-conceptual, representative-conceptual, critical, and comprehensive-conceptual, highlighting significant differences in expansive learning actions based on gender between mixed and single-gender teams.
This work makes an original contribution to the field of distance education, advancing theoretical understanding of expansive learning and introducing an innovative methodological approach for studying interactions in digital environments. Additionally, the article emphasizes the importance of considering gender perspectives in the design and evaluation of pedagogical models for distance learning, offering insights that can guide future research and more inclusive educational practices.
