Lessons from Adapting a Medical Course during Pandemic-Driven Remote Education

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted higher education, forcing both students and instructors, many of whom had limited experience with e-learning, to adapt to remote teaching on a global scale. 

This sudden shift has underscored the importance of integrating new information and communication technologies (ICTs) into education, a trend already gaining traction over the past decade. In smaller nations, such as Uruguay, the challenge of transforming face-to-face courses into effective online formats has been particularly significant. 

Redesigning courses for the digital environment, including learning activities and assessment, presents a complex task that requires more than simply transferring traditional methods to online platforms.


This article explores the adaptation of a Haematology and Immunology course in Uruguay during the pandemic, comparing student performance in traditional face-to-face settings with outcomes from an e-learning environment. 

By integrating flipped learning and innovative assessment techniques, this study demonstrates the potential for well-designed e-learning approaches to enhance student engagement and success, providing a model for the future of online education in Uruguay and beyond.
