What evidence shows that online learning really works?

This introductory article to the special issue of the Revista Iberoamericana de Educación a Distancia (RIED), titled Evidence of Learning in Educational Practices Mediated by Digital Technologies, provides an overview of the studies included in this monograph. Its central aim is to deepen the understanding of how digital technologies impact the processes and outcomes of learning in various educational contexts.

Coordinated by César Coll Salvador, Frida Díaz Barriga Arceo, Anna Engel Rocamora, and Jesús Salinas Ibáñez, this article serves as a starting point for examining the different approaches and methods used in educational research mediated by technologies, particularly in the Ibero-American region.

The authors emphasize the importance of addressing educational environments, digital tools, and pedagogical methodologies from a critical perspective, analyzing not only the resources employed but also the quality of the learning achieved by students. Although online learning has gained prominence in recent years, particularly in the post-pandemic context, learning outcomes and the evidence supporting them have been relatively underexplored in distance education research.

This special issue aims to fill that gap, paying special attention to the characteristics of the evidence of learning obtained in these environments and how it can be interpreted and used to improve educational practices.

In addition to offering a critical review of the current state of research, the article highlights the need for robust theoretical and methodological frameworks to obtain valid and relevant evidence of learning outcomes in technology-mediated environments.

The studies presented in this special issue explore, from various perspectives, the impact of digital technologies on learning, with a particular focus on the Ibero-American region. In many of the studies, the COVID-19 pandemic plays a crucial role, as educational institutions had to quickly adapt to online teaching, presenting both challenges and opportunities to rethink distance education and the evidence of the learning achieved.
