How to Design Effective Microlearning Strategies in Education?

This article by Betancur-Chicué and García-Valcárcel (2023), published in RIED – Ibero-American Journal of Distance Education, presents a comprehensive systematic review of the key features of microlearning (ML) in educational settings.

Based on 34 studies selected between 2018 and 2021, the analysis identifies the most common advantages, limitations, areas of application, and design principles of this instructional approach—characterised by short, accessible, and rapidly assimilated learning content. The study highlights how ML has become a valuable tool for introductory learning, professional development, and cognitive load reduction, with notable application in fields such as health, education, and engineering.

One of the article’s major contributions is the systematisation of quality design elements for microlearning: modular structures with an introduction, microcontent, and quick assessments; the inclusion of educational videos and interactivity; and mobile-friendly formats. The review also compiles several foundational theories that support the effectiveness of ML, such as Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Gagné’s Nine Events of Instruction.

The article further illustrates how ML can be enhanced when combined with strategies like flipped learning, gamification, or mobile learning, and how it benefits from technologies such as QR codes, LMS platforms, and social media.

Despite its potential, the study acknowledges that microlearning still faces limitations: it is not ideal for addressing complex topics, requires more sophisticated feedback and peer interaction, and demands improvements in assessment and contextualisation. The authors suggest the need for further exploration of micro-assessment, adaptive design, and the impact of ML across different educational levels.

This review stands as a valuable reference for researchers, instructional designers, and educators aiming to harness microlearning as an innovative and effective pedagogical strategy.
