Flexibility and Autonomy in Learning: The HyFlex Approach

This article analyzes an innovative educational experience at the University of La Laguna during the 2019, 2020, and 2021 academic years. The HyFlex model combines face-to-face classes with autonomous work in a virtual classroom, allowing students to choose between different learning strategies, such as group projects or individual study units.

Unlike other HyFlex approaches that merely broadcast face-to-face classes online, this model integrated in-person sessions with asynchronous work in a virtual environment, offering genuine flexibility in the choice of learning methods. Students could adapt their studies to their needs and schedules, deciding how and when to participate.

The research utilized opinion surveys and analysis of academic grades. The results showed a high degree of satisfaction and positive feedback from students. Additionally, high academic performance was observed regardless of the chosen learning pathway, suggesting that the HyFlex model is both viable and effective.

The study concludes that the HyFlex approach has great potential to revolutionize higher education by providing greater autonomy and flexibility to students. For successful implementation, it is crucial to have appropriate institutional conditions and for faculty to possess the necessary pedagogical and digital competencies.
