The special issue “Computer-supported collaborative learning”, coordinated by Núria Hernández-Sellés, Pablo César Muñoz-Carril, and Mercedes González-Sanmamed, explores the potential and challenges of technology-mediated collaborative learning, known as Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL).
This approach is based on the idea that collaboration in virtual environments not only enhances individual learning through group interaction but also promotes a culture of cooperation aligned with 21st-century skills. The coordinators emphasize the need to integrate a humanistic perspective that complements technical expertise, highlighting the role of pedagogy, social interaction, and socio-emotional components in higher education’s digital settings.
The volume brings together eight articles that examine collaborative work from diverse angles and methodologies. Among the contributions are validated models to understand the socio-emotional dynamics of teamwork, phenomenological studies on the use of collaborative tools in postgraduate programs, and technopedagogical proposals combining flipped learning and collaborative writing.
Additionally, the issue addresses topics such as inclusivity in online collaborative environments, the identification of key success factors for collaborative learning, teacher scaffolding in collective knowledge-building, and the validation of models based on collaborative project-based learning. Each study provides evidence and strategies to optimize digital interaction in educational contexts.
This special issue is complemented by the “Studies and Research” section, which features eight additional papers related to educational innovation and the development of digital competencies. As a result, the volume not only offers an updated overview of CSCL but also encourages debate and reflection on how higher education institutions can integrate collaborative technologies with a humanistic vision.
The diversity of perspectives and the solid scientific foundation of the articles make this RIED issue an essential reference for researchers, educators, and professionals interested in digital collaborative education.
