How to Integrate Digital Competence for Citizens into the Educational System?

In this article, Diana Marín Suelves, Nuria Cuevas Monzonís, and Vicente Gabarda Méndez analyze the integration of digital competence for citizens into current educational systems.

Despite efforts and international frameworks that promote its inclusion, such as the Digital Competence Framework for Citizens (DigComp) of the European Union, the implementation of these competencies remains uneven.

This study addresses the phenomenon from a bibliometric and bibliographic perspective, exploring both scientific production and the content of open-access research.

The analysis focuses on 87 articles selected from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, highlighting the significant increase in scientific production in recent years and Spain's prominent position in this field.

The authors examine various aspects, such as the educational stage, participants, and the specific areas of the DigComp Framework addressed in these studies. The results emphasize the importance of factors such as teacher training and the characteristics of the institutional context in the development of digital competence.

The findings of this study provide a comprehensive view of the integration of digital competence for citizens into education, identifying both the tools and means used and the challenges and opportunities that arise.

This work highlights the need for more effective and contextualized pedagogical approaches and proposes strategies to continue improving the inclusion of digital competence in all educational stages, thus contributing to the development of a more digitally competent citizenry.
