Call for Papers: Generative Artificial Intelligence in virtual learning environments and other technologies

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR RIED – Vol. 28(2)

RIED-Ibero-American Journal of Distance Education (RIED)the journal of Digital Education, only accepts:

  • Significant and rigorous scientific papers in the field of open, flexible, and distance teaching and learning, e-learning, artificial intelligence, and technologies applied to education.
  • Original, novel, and unpublished articles that contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge, avoiding the repetition of common topics and conclusions, which will result in the rejection of submissions.
  • Priority will be given to articles developed in higher education contexts or those that justifiably show a clear potential for application in such contexts.

Each issue of RIED publishes between 15 and 17 articles. Due to the increasing attention the journal receives, we receive a large number of submissions for each call, necessitating a prioritization process to select those that best meet the publication's criteria and requirements.

Therefore, before submitting an article to this journal, you must consult this document and the links it references. Non-compliance with any of these criteria, requirements, or standards may be sufficient grounds for rejection. Many articles are rejected simply after reading the summary/abstract. Please also pay attention to the Author's Duties

Priorities for the current call:

1. In the upcoming call for Vol. 28(2), priority will be given to the best papers related to the following themes, always focused on their real or potential application in online, virtual, digital, or distance environments, with an emphasis on higher education contexts:

  • Learning with artificial intelligence in distance and digital educational settings:
    • empirical studies on AI applications;
    • successful educational practices integrating AI in design, methodology, development, evaluation, and management;
    • costs and benefits;
    • theoretical and conceptual frameworks related to AI and education;
    • social and ethical implications;
    • limitations of AI, ethical issues, etc.
  • Learning through robotics, computational thinking, chatbots, virtual assistants, machine learning, blockchain, and intelligent tutoring.
  • Learning through the metaverse, virtual and augmented reality, immersive environments, and extended reality, remote and virtual laboratories.
  • Learning through gamification, games, and simulations.
  • Adaptive learning and personalization, supported by artificial intelligence.
2. Secondly, excellent papers on the following topics may also be considered, always focused on their real or potential application in online, virtual, digital, or distance environments, preferably in university education:
  • Learning based on simulation, synchrony and asynchrony, mobile, self-directed, hybrid, and flipped learning.
  • Collaborative learning, online socialization, and interaction.
  • Online learning applying learning analytics, data mining, and big data.
  • New approaches in distance learning design.
  • Development of digital competencies in teachers and students.
  • Learning with LMS, social networks, messaging, and chat.
  • Assessment, self-regulation, success-dropout, feedback, and prediction in digital contexts.
  • Universities of the future or the future of universities. Digital transformation.
  • Distance education, equity, inclusion, and diversity. Effectiveness and efficiency of novel practices.
  • Innovative practices, teaching and tutoring in digital systems that demonstrate academic achievements, overcoming failures, dropouts, etc.
  • Current challenges in distance education.

In any case, we will prioritize papers on the above topics that can show empirical research with results and evidence of learning after practical applications.

3. Thirdly, beyond the stated priority, there will always be space in RIED for the publication of excellent papers that offer new theoretical approaches or present novel, relevant, and well-founded social and ethical implications in educational practice, provided they are related to the basic objectives of this journal.

Key dates:

  • Article submission: during November 2024 (deadline 01/12/2024). Avoid sending articles before November 2024.
  • Official publication: This issue (Vol. 28(2)) corresponds to 01/07/2025.
  • OnlineFirst publication: Before the official publication date, articles will be published in OnlineFirst format (ready to read and cite) as they pass the different evaluation phases.

Important:

  • Please, avoid sending articles before November 2024.
  • Do not submit any work to RIED unless you are convinced that all the parameters required in this document and the referenced links are met.
  • All submissions will be directed to the "Studies and Research" section.
  • All articles not considered for publication in Vol. 28(2) will be rejected.
