In the era of digitalization in higher education, the Ibero-American Journal of Distance Education (RIED) dedicates its Special Issue to "Collaborative Learning in Digital Environments", exploring how these educational practices can transform teaching and learning in the 21st century.

Coordinated by Nuria Hernández-Sellés, Pablo-César Muñoz-Carril, and Mercedes González-Sanmamed, this Special Issue gathers research that addresses the challenges and opportunities of technology-mediated collaborative learning from various perspectives.

The introductory article, written by the coordinators of the monograph, provides an analysis of the incorporation of collaborative practices in higher education, highlighting the importance of integrating technical and humanistic competencies in a digital environment.

The authors emphasize that to meet current challenges, it is crucial for educators to develop both technological skills and the ability to foster collaboration and socio-emotional learning among students.

This Special Issue highlights the need for continuous teacher training and institutional support, presenting case studies and practical models that illustrate how to effectively implement collaborative learning in various educational contexts.
