The article "Educational Inclusion in Times of COVID-19: Use of Social Media for People with Intellectual Disabilities" by Mónica Bonilla-del-Río and María Luisa Sánchez Calero addresses one of the most significant challenges brought by the pandemic: the sudden need to adapt education to a virtual environment.
In this context, the research focuses on how individuals with intellectual disabilities, a particularly vulnerable group, have navigated the transition to using digital platforms and social media as a means to continue their educational processes and maintain communication.
The study, conducted at a center in the Community of Madrid, explores both the benefits and barriers encountered during this process, assessing the perspectives of young people with disabilities, their families, and the specialists involved in their education.
The findings emphasize the importance of digital inclusion as a crucial component of social and educational inclusion, highlighting the need for increased training in digital skills to prevent the deepening of the digital divide within this group.
At a time when connectivity and access to technology are more critical than ever, the article offers valuable insights into how these elements can be leveraged to improve the quality of life and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.
