What Role Do Audiovisuals Play in the Classroom of the Future?

This introductory article of the special issue titled "Audiovisual and Multiscreen Education" highlights the evolution of the use of audiovisual media in education from the 20th century to the present.

Traditionally, media such as cinema, radio, and especially television were central to research on their educational potential, emphasizing their ability to facilitate students' understanding through images, sounds, and graphics.

However, the advancement of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the emergence of the "multiscreen society" have profoundly transformed the educational landscape. Today, mobile devices, social networks, and digital platforms are replacing traditional media, leading to changes in teaching methodologies and the roles of teachers and students.

This special issue brings together various studies on the educational opportunities offered by audiovisual media in this new digital environment.

The special issue includes research addressing the production of educational audiovisual content in different contexts, with a special emphasis on the use of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), the integration of multimedia platforms, and the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on education.

The articles explore how sound, video, and images have become key tools for learning, adapted to new digital and mobile formats. Additionally, they analyze cases of teaching innovation, digital teacher training during the pandemic, and the challenges of educational inclusion in times of lockdown. In summary, this special issue anylizes the digital transformation of education and how audiovisual media remain essential, though adapted to new technologies and digital environments.
