Assessing the Impact of Digital Tools on Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

Digital Technologies (DT) have significantly enhanced communication, access to information, and autonomy across various domains. However, their impact on the care and support of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) remains an evolving area of research, particularly in emergency situations.

Individuals with ID often encounter significant barriers in managing unexpected events, such as difficulty in seeking help or interpreting warning signals. DT can play a crucial role as assistive technologies, offering tailored tools that enhance safety, well-being, and social participation.

This article presents a systematic literature review on the use of DT for supporting individuals with ID in emergency contexts, adhering to the PRISMA Declaration guidelines. Through the analysis of 14 relevant studies, the research explores the benefits and limitations of existing technological solutions, ranging from mobile applications to wearable smart devices.

Key trends are identified, such as the use of pictograms to facilitate communication and the integration of geolocation functions to support navigation. However, findings reveal that many technologies still rely on user-initiated actions, posing challenges for individuals with severe communication or decision-making difficulties.

The study’s findings have significant implications for research and the development of inclusive technologies. On the one hand, they highlight the necessity of designing solutions that are not only accessible but also incorporate automated assistance mechanisms in crisis situations.

On the other hand, they underscore the importance of training and awareness-raising among individuals with ID, their families, and support professionals regarding the effective use of these tools. Ultimately, this work contributes to the broader discourse on DT integration in accessibility, advocating for an approach grounded in equity and autonomy for all individuals.
