The article “Audiovisual and Multiscreen Education” serves as the introductory piece of the special issue of RIED devoted to this theme. Authored by Ignacio Aguaded (University of Huelva) and Miguel Ángel Ortiz-Sobrino (Complutense University of Madrid), coordinators of the issue, it provides a historical and conceptual overview of the role of audiovisual media in education, from radio and television to today’s digital ecosystem.
The authors show how the rise of the so-called “multiscreen society” and the consolidation of digital platforms have reshaped teaching methodologies, redefining both the role of teachers and students’ expectations.
This opening study emphasizes the growing educational potential of audiovisual resources—sound, video, and image—when adapted to mobile devices and networked environments. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this trend, consolidating audiovisual content as a structural component of e-learning, blended learning, and lifelong learning strategies.
By situating the discussion between historical precedents and current digital practices, the article provides readers with a critical framework for understanding the pedagogical opportunities of the contemporary multiscreen landscape.
Finally, Aguaded and Ortiz-Sobrino present this special issue as a collective exploration of the intersections between audiovisual culture, technology, and pedagogy. The contributions reflect the diversity and richness of the field: from MOOCs and podcasts to educational television, web radio, and social media.
By placing audiovisual media at the center of contemporary educational practice, the editors invite scholars, educators, and policymakers to rethink how knowledge is produced, shared, and experienced in an interconnected, multiscreen world.
