Is the university using technology to innovate, or merely to substitute?

The digital transformation of the university is not simply about incorporating platforms, applications, or technological resources into the classroom.

The article by Anna Sánchez-Caballé and Francesc M. Esteve-Mon addresses precisely this issue: how digital technologies are being used in higher education and which teaching methodologies accompany them. Based on a systematic literature review, the study offers a clear overview of a field in constant evolution, shaped by the momentum of the European Higher Education Area, the expansion of e-learning, and the accelerating impact of the pandemic.

One of the main contributions of the study is that it shows that technology alone does not guarantee pedagogical innovation. Among the most frequent methodologies are group work, problem-based learning, and examinations, along with others such as simulation, debate, case studies, and tutorials.

However, the findings reveal that, in many cases, the teaching use of technologies remains substitutive: existing practices are digitalized, but teaching and learning processes are not always profoundly transformed. At the same time, the study identifies experiences in which students adopt a more creative and interactive role, opening up interesting possibilities for more active and meaningful teaching.

The message conveyed by this article is clear: the challenge of the digital university is not only technical, but also pedagogical, organizational, and cultural. Integrating digital technologies requires us to consider what they are used for, how they are articulated with teaching methodologies, and what kind of learning they promote. For this reason, this review is especially valuable for teachers, researchers, and academic leaders interested in moving toward more reflective, active, and transformative university practices.

Rather than celebrating digitalization as an end in itself, the article invites us to ask how it can be turned into a real opportunity to improve teaching and learning in higher education.
